UQRFC Retain Templeton McLean Trophy
University of Queensland registered a narrow 21-15 win over Brothers on Saturday to retain the Templeton-Mclean Cup.
It was the Heavies sternest test of the season, as Brothers looked to have benefitted from the bye week leading up to the match.
The first half was littered with heavy hitting as both sides refused to give away early points.
UQ fullback Nathan Russell opened up the scoring, dotting down next to the posts after two crisp passes from James Dalgleish and Alex Horan.
For the remainder of the half, UQ looked ominous but Brothers held firm in defence to ensure the score remained at 7-nil at half time.
10 minutes into the second stanza, Patrick James fired a cut-out pass to Will Shipperley did well to finish off the movement and score.
The two-point margin was short lived after UQ came back to score from a lineout rolling maul play with Hamish Richardson placing the ball over the line.
UQ looked certain to score again but some strong try-line defence led by Emmanuel Latu held the Heavies out.
Brothers worked their way back into an attacking position and their forward pack got rolling maul revenge to reduce the Heavies lead to two points.
Soon after the restart, replacement scrumhalf Tate McDemott exposed Brothers defence with a deft offload to Thomas Mellor who dished to Horan for the final try of the match.
In the dying stages, Brothers were awarded a penalty opportunity and opted to secure the bonus-point by reducing the margin to six points.
Next week University head to Oldmac Oval to take on the Dragons and Brothers travel to Yoku road to play the Gallopers.
