Charity Round is an annual event in which UQ Rugby chooses a charity to raise funds through an online jersey auction. Each 1st Grade jersey is sponsored by a different business and these jerseys are then auctioned off with all proceeds going to the chosen charity. Past charities include Legacy, Lifeline and Modified Rugby Program, raising over $15,000 collectively.
This season the benefactor of Charity Round is the UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Fund.
A university education can be a powerful game-changer for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with impact extending to whole families, communities and the nation. In 2021, UQ Rugby has partnered with UQ to create change together by creating new opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
The 1st Grade jersey will feature designs from the hero artwork of UQ’s Reconciliation Action Plan, A Guidance Through Time by Quandamooka artists, Casey Coolwell and Kyra Mancktelow.
Through this initiative, UQ Rugby has committed to raising funds for the UQ Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship Fund to empower Indigenous students to follow their dreams through access to higher education.
The artwork can be read in three sections, starting with the blue/greys of the Herston campus, purple of St Lucia and orange/golds of Gatton. Elements overlaying the campus colours symbolise UQ values. The Brisbane River and its pattern represent UQ’s Pursuit of excellence. Within the River are tools used by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to teach, gather, hunt and protect.
The online auction will be open until 4pm on Sunday 18 July and can be found here.
