Building legacy: UQ commits $5M to UQRFC’s new home

The University of Queensland has committed $5 million in matched funding to help deliver a new state-of-the-art clubhouse for the UQ Rugby Football Club (UQRFC), marking a major milestone in the Club’s $15 million redevelopment campaign.

Announced by UQ Vice-Chancellor and proud UQRFC Patron, Professor Deborah Terry AC, the funding will support the transformation of the Club’s 50-year-old facility into a modern, high-performance hub for student-athletes and the wider rugby community.

The announcement follows the official launch of UQRFC’s ambitious plans for a new home ground at UQ, with early fundraising efforts in partnership with UQ already generating $5 million in philanthropic support.

“This is more than a building – it’s an investment in the future of sport at UQ,” Professor Terry said.

“UQRFC has been part of our community for more than 110 years, and this facility will inspire the next generation of rugby leaders and scholars.

“With the Brisbane Olympics on the horizon, this redevelopment will be a game changer – not just for UQ Rugby, but for the University and the broader sporting landscape.

“It will build on the extensive facilities in the UQ sporting precinct as we invest in legacy assets in the lead-up to 2032 and beyond.”

The new clubhouse will feature:

  • A high-performance gym
  • Modern male and female locker rooms
  • Upper and lower terraces overlooking the field
  • Meeting rooms and office spaces
  • A function space and merchandise store

UQRFC is now calling on alumni, supporters and the broader community to help raise the remaining $5 million needed to bring the vision to life.

Steve Wilson AM, Co-Chair of the Fundraising Committee, said the new clubhouse was vital to the future of UQ Rugby.

“UQ Rugby has a proud legacy – 12 Wallaby captains, 17 Wallaroos and 36 Rhodes Scholars – but its true strength lies in the community it builds,” Mr Wilson said.

“It’s where lifelong friendships are forged, and young men and women grow into leaders. To ensure UQ Rugby continues to thrive both on and off the field, now is the time for a world-class facility.”

With the backing of the University and the passion of our community, UQ Rugby is building not just a clubhouse but a legacy for generations to come.
